THE BYZANTINE MONASTERY OF SAINT ANARGYROI
AND THE HERMIT CAVES.
The monastery of Saints Anargyroi(the penniless ones) is situated in Aghia district, in the prefecture of Larisa, near a small river in the forest clearing of a narrow gorge and close
to high rocks on the east where the hermit places are situated.
Τhe main temple is an one room wooden temple with religious wall painting fragments that are dated back in the 17 C. Written documents confirm its existence back in 1588(Post Byzantine period) while it was renovated sometime
in the 17 C. We
can not exclude the possibility that it was built during the Byzantine period. From the courtyard it is saved only a defense tower with a small bolt.In a close distance, inside a large hole there are preserved two hermit places that are dated back in the 12ου century where we can admire religious paintings on the natural wall stones, the largest of them is made of three natural small cave temple.
It is situated in a wonderful landscape, inside a small forest of plane trees close to the riverside and it has rare samples of Byzantine art.
